“In the Name of Life” National Breast Cancer Association has signed a Collaboration Agreement with Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the largest foundation in the US dedicated to fighting breast cancer. As the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, the foundation works to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cure. The Agreement will help to step up charitable activities overseen by “In the Name of Life” National Association in Uzbekistan and to run collaborative projects.
The organization was founded by Nancy G. Brinker in memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died of breast cancer at the age of 36. The foundation is now the global leader of the breast cancer movement which has invested more than $1.9 billion since its inception in 1982. It has provided funding for basic, clinical, and translational breast cancer research and for innovative projects in the areas of breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment. It also provides grants to non-governmental organizations to aid in the development and implementation of breast health and breast cancer programs and services. Presently, Komen for the Cure has partners in more than 50 countries across the world, with Uzbekistan being the first country in Central Asia to have signed a collaboration agreement with the organization. Moreover, its activities are supported by over 100,000 volunteers. Since 1982, Komen for the Cure has played a critical role in every major advance in the fight against breast cancer – transforming how the world talks about and treats this disease and helping to turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast cancer survivors.
“In the Name of Life” National Breast Cancer Association brings together specialists, grassroots people and breast cancer survivors and has been working over the past 3 years to broaden opportunities for the prevention, early detection and treatment of breast cancer and other cancerous diseases that affect the female reproductive system. Annually, the Association organizes a series of major events dedicated to improving the medico-social and psychological support of women in Uzbekistan. It oversees charity events, concerts and fundraising auctions to support “In the Name of Life” Association of Women. These activities also seek to draw public attention to the problem of breast cancer. One of the Association’s key charitable projects is the annual “In the Name of Life” Charity Marathon. As many as 38,000 people throughout the republic have joined the race since the first marathon was held. To date, over 15,000 women have participated in free diagnostics, awareness and early detection events organized by the Association. More than 3,000 women have been provided with 900,430,000 soums worth of drugs free of charge. In addition, the Association organizes workshops led by international professionals geared for local breast care specialists, gynecologists and psychologists.
